Indie/folk-rock band The Accidentals will host a BlueJay session on Tuesday September 12th at 8pm (GMT) 5pm (EST).
The three-piece multi-instrumentalist group hail from Traverse City, Michigan and have been named “America’s next best thing” by Yahoo Music. Their songs are a fusion of folk, bluegrass, alt-rock, and even classical music.
We caught up with them to find out what we can expect from their BlueJay session and to find out a little bit more about what they’re about!
Sav: We’re just a couple of introverts that survived middle school because we had a connection with music. We met in our public high school orchestra program, and Katie and I were thrown together for a project – that’s when we realized we both had the same alternative bands on our playlists. I was playing violin in a folk band, and Katie was studying classical cello and playing guitar in the jazz band. I was writing novels, and Katie was writing songs in her closet. We inspired each other. I learned to novel in a song and play other instruments, and Katie used her cello in alternative ways to create the signature sound for what became The Accidentals.
Music is a universal platform in which we are all equal. We give and receive equally. It heals, it calms, it offers hope, and activates parts of the brain that need to be stimulated. Making music is as therapeutic as listening to music for us.
Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens, Jack White, Vulfpeck, Queen, Jack Steadman, St. Vincent…we could go on forever.
Sav: Katie and I listened to a lot of different styles of music. Our parents were musicians, so Classical, Jazz, Fusion, Country, Folk, Pop, R&B, and the obscure, genre-less, crossover, technically well-executed music that often gets lost without a label.
Katie: Growing up my living room was usually filled with Blossom Dearie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Barenaked Ladies, or broadway musical soundtracks. During middle school Sav and I both started getting into bands like The White Stripes, Flight of the Conchords, Death Cab For Cutie, Kimya Dawson..etc.
Sav: “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, except I’m drinking highly caffeinated tea and screaming all the words along like a maniac as a drive.
Katie: “Wait for the Moment” by Vulfpeck *before drinking kombucha*
Sav: Ideal night out would be a midnight taco run and going to a concert with friends, followed by a good book and a cat.
Katie: Would definitely include food and hopefully a hammock.
Sav: Jalapeño potato chips. All the jalapeño potato chips.
Katie: Ramen. And coffee. And Gilmore Girls.
Katie: A little bit of everything.
Sav: Music that makes you feel or think. Timeless music. Music you might not have heard of. Innovative music, interesting lyrics, intelligent music. Just good music.
